Kinetically Induced Fine Secondary α-Ti Phase Formation in a Novel As-Cast Titanium Alloy

The formation of fine secondary hexagonal close packed (HCP) α-Ti precipitates provides major strengthening in a new Ti-6Al-5Fe-0.05B-0.05C (mass fractions pct) cast alloy. phase transformation mechanisms from the body-centered cubic (BCC) β-Ti matrix to α this α-β titanium alloy were investigated experimentally and computationally using CALculation PHAse Diagram (CALPHAD)-based thermodynamic kinetic models. discrete distribution was observed as-cast with evidence strong Fe partitioning. Two main size groups partitioning characterized scanning electron microscopy, transmission synchrotron-based small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. A hypothesis Fe-partitioning driven precipitate nucleation growth validated by precipitation simulation TC-PRISMA customized descriptions. These results suggested design route involving high-mobility elements (enhancing precipitates) demonstrated capability CALPHAD-based modeling design.
